School Zone

Our school zone is available on findmyschool.vic.gov.au. Findmyschool.vic.gov.au hosts the most up-to-date information about Victorian school zones.

Students residing in this zone are guaranteed a place at our school, which is determined on the basis of your permanent residential address.

The Department provides guidance through the School Placement Policy to ensure that students have access to their designated neighbourhood school.

The Department of Education is supporting schools under enrolment pressure to ensure every child is able to attend their local school. As part of this yearly review, schools under or at risk of enrolment pressure are being supported with an Enrolment Management Implementation Plan. South Melbourne Primary School has been identified as at risk of enrolment pressure and therefore has enrolment restrictions in place.

The limited playground space, area for any new building on the site and the strong desire of our school community to implement our curriculum program in a safe and welcoming environment has initiated the Victorian Department of Education to implement an Enrolment Management Plan for South Melbourne Primary School to manage the enrolments at this school.

Enrolment restriction

South Melbourne Primary School has been issued with entry criteria under section 2.2.16 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic). DET Approved entry criteria for South Melbourne Primary School:

Students who live within the school zone (guaranteed entry)

Students with a sibling attending the school at the same time

Students seeking placement at South Melbourne Primary School in all year levels must meet one of the above criteria to be eligible for enrolment.

You can find more information and answers to frequently asked questions on the Department’s website under School zones.

Foundation (Prep) Enrolments

The Department of Education has a statewide Foundation (Prep) enrolment timeline.

The timeline advises families when and how to enrol their child into Foundation (Prep) at a Victorian government primary school, including South Melbourne Primary School.

You can find information and resources about the enrolment timeline at: Enrolling in Foundation (Prep).

Prep 2025 completed Enrolment Documentation, should be submitted by Friday 26 July 2024.

Sibling Claim Enrolment that are Outside the Designated Neighbourhood Area

In the event that a Prep (Foundation) student has a sibling, who will be attending South Melbourne Primary School in 2025 and whose residential address is located outside the designated neighbourhood, then the Foundation Student can apply for enrolment at SMPS on sibling grounds.

We will provide Parents / Carers with written notification of Prep 2025 enrolment outcomes as per the Department’s Placement Policy between Monday 29 July and Friday 9 August 2024.

Enrolments submitted after 26 July 2024 will be processed by our school as they are received, in accordance with the department’s Placement Policy.

How to Enrol

Step 1

Download Student Enrolment Form

If your residential address is zoned to South Melbourne Primary School, you will need to complete the Enrolment form in full and return it to our school office, along with the supporting documentation listed on the enrolment checklist.

Step 2

Enrolment Documentation

All student enrolments must be formalised by completing an enrolment form and providing copies of the following documentation:

  • Birth Certificate (English translated)
  • Immunisation Form from the Australian Immunisation Register
  • Proof of Residence (100-Point Checklist) To avoid delays to the enrolment process, please ensure that the documents you supply add up to the 100-points required for proof of residence
  • Medical Management Plans (Asthma and Anaphylaxis)
  • Student Visa*
  • Latest School Report
  • Student Drawing or Letter for the Principal

*All copies of student visas must be provided to the School as part of the enrolment process. The student’s eligibility for enrolment is based on the visa of the student and then in the second instance the family or parent. Depending on the status and visa number, students may need to apply through the Victorian Schools International Division https://www.study.vic.gov.au/en/Pages/default.aspx

Please note that enrolment applications may not be accepted if the requested documentation is not provided.

Step 3

Drop off student enrolment form & supporting documentation to reception

All enrolment applications must be handed into the School’s Reception in person along with the supporting documentation. We do not accept electronic copies. All hard copy completed Enrolment Forms are to be submitted in person to the school office by making an appointment to see our Office Manager. To make your appointment, please call our office on (03) 9935 9399. Once your enrolment form has been accepted, we will book in a student assessment and pre-enrolment interview with the Principal and you will receive a School Information Pack.

Please note that enrolment applications may not be successful if the requested documentation is not provided.

If you are currently overseas, please e-mail the school and we will be happy to help.

Step 4

Pre enrolment assessment & interview

All new students (excepting Foundation (Prep) students for the following year) are required to complete a pre-enrolment General Assessment Test prior to enrolment and also attend with their families a pre enrolment interview with the Principal, Assistant Principal or Head of Student Wellbeing.

The Principal also requests a copy of the child’s most recent school report and for your child to write a letter to the Principal or draw a picture. Both of these items are to be submitted along with the enrolment application.

These additional documents will be used to support your child’s transition to our school, not to consider whether an enrolment is accepted.

Each Student Assessment will take approximately 20 minutes for Prep to Grade 2 students and 1 hour for Grade 3-6 Students and are held at the school. Whilst the student is sitting the assessment – parents are to meet with our Office Manager to go through school information and answer any questions you may have.

Each Principal interview is approximately 30 minutes, and all interviews are held at the School.

Interview and Assessment times and dates are confirmed when an enrolment application is submitted in full. Please allow at least one full school/work week to complete the enrolment process before your child commences at our school.
